Mercedes-Benz USA (MBUSA) has announced a significant increase of public charging possibilities for its electric vehicle customers. Beginning in February 2025, Mercedes-Benz BEV owners will have access to over 20,000 Tesla Superchargers across the United States and Canada via the Mercedes me Charge1 service, providing “Plug & Charge” capabilities. This strategic connection demonstrates Mercedes-Benz’s ongoing commitment to its entire charging ecosystem, which offers all of its electric car customers a fast, convenient charging and payment experience no matter how they want to charge.
“As our technologically advanced and highly compelling all-electric vehicle portfolio continues to grow, we recognize that a critical component for a seamless ownership experience for our customers is to ensure convenient access to a broad charging network. Adopting the NACS standard in our electric vehicles and opening the Tesla Supercharger network to our battery electric vehicle customers represents an important step forward as we continue to build a strong foundation to bring additional, game-changing all-electric vehicles to the market. Together with our fantastic dealer partners, we remain committed to reimagining the future of mobility and setting the benchmark in the luxury segment.” said Dimitris Psillakis, CEO, Mercedes-Benz USA
Charging Experience: An Industry Benchmark
The Tesla Supercharger network will be incorporated into Mercedes me Charge, the company’s own charging service that provides easy public charging experiences at charging networks such as Mercedes-Benz High-Power Charging, IONNA, Electrify America, EVGo, ChargePoint, and others.
“By opening access to Tesla Superchargers in North America to our customers, we underline our commitment to providing our customers with as many charging options as possible. The fast-growing network of charging points available in Mercedes me Charge will now expand to over 110,000 public charging points across the United States and Canada, providing Mercedes-Benz drivers with an industry-leading charging experience whenever and wherever they choose to charge.” said Franz Reiner, Chairman of the Board of Management, Mercedes-Benz Mobility AG.
Mercedes-Benz BEV drivers will be able to use “Plug & Charge” capability at Tesla Superchargers, which instantly begins the charging session upon plugging in and smoothly processes payments in the background when charging is completed. Authorized Mercedes-Benz dealerships will conduct a complimentary software update for all eligible vehicles2 to guarantee that Plug & Charge operations at Tesla Superchargers run smoothly and easily. Customers whose cars are in scope will be contacted directly to schedule a software upgrade. Charging may also be activated via the Mercedes-Benz app3 or the MBUX infotainment system. Tesla Superchargers will be integrated into Mercedes-Benz’s “Navigation with Electric Intelligence” system.
This technology automatically directs drivers to the most efficient, time-saving route, including transparent charging stations and timings. Furthermore, Mercedes me Charge provides drivers with real-time charger location, availability, status, and price for all in-network charging sites via the Mercedes-Benz smartphone and the MBUX infotainment system.
Adapter for Current Electric Vehicle Models
To assist existing Mercedes-Benz EV drivers with CCS1-compatible charging ports, the business will offer a NACS to CCS1 DC fast charging converter that has been certified by Mercedes. The adapter, which will allow existing vehicles to charge at Tesla Superchargers, will be available for $185 in Q1 2025 at authorized Mercedes-Benz dealerships in the United States and from Canadian dealerships in Q2 2025, with pricing to be confirmed closer to market introduction. Customers will be alerted when adapters may be purchased. This NACS to CCS1 adapter is the only one that has been safety tested and approved to work with all Mercedes-Benz BEVs and any NACS DC fast charging point.
NACS integration in the future
Mercedes-Benz will begin incorporating NACS ports into its new North American electrified car portfolio in 2025. This will ensure that future Mercedes-Benz vehicles may connect directly to any NACS DC fast charging point without the use of an adaptor, making charging even more easy for Mercedes-Benz consumers.
The Mercedes-Benz charging environment
The integration of NACS into Mercedes-Benz’s car lineup, as well as the inclusion of the Tesla Supercharger network to the quickly expanding Mercedes me Charge portfolio, are the brand’s most recent offers in a holistic approach to EV charging. Mercedes-Benz High-Power Charging debuted in North America in November 2023, with the goal of improving the public charging experience for all EV drivers by installing Mercedes-Benz-branded 400kW chargers in Texas, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Kentucky, with plans to expand to half of the US states by 2026. In addition, the IONNA joint venture, a cooperation between Mercedes-Benz and seven other automakers, will open its first “rechargeries” this year, clearing the door for an additional 30,000 high-power charging outlets across North America to help encourage EV adoption more generally.
