Espoo, Finland— By expanding its 5G network capabilities and updating locations in remote Australia, Nokia will help Optus’s network development, the firm stated today. To improve the efficiency of Optus’ network, Nokia will implement its most recent generation of Habrok Massive MIMO radios as well as its Levante ultra-performance baseband solutions from its AirScale portfolio. This strategic upgrade strengthens Optus’s commitment to offering more coverage, better data speeds, and an improved customer experience. It comes after the company signed a Multi-Operator Core Network (MOCN) RAN-sharing deal with TPG Telecom last year.
The small, light, and highly effective Habrok 32 massive MIMO radios, which are powered by Nokia’s state-of-the-art ReefShark System-on-Chip (SoC) technology, provide a 33 percent increase in output power, assisting Optus in providing coverage and capacity while drastically lowering power consumption. These adaptable, simple-to-install systems are perfect for site upgrading and new deployments. Optus can increase data speeds and improve coverage by making the most of shared spectrum assets in RAN-sharing locations thanks to Habrok 32.
Habrok’s “Extreme Deep Sleep” power-saving mode, which turns down idle resources and lowers radio cell energy consumption, will also be available to Optus for improved energy efficiency. This function does not negatively affect network performance while saving energy. Levante, a 5G baseband capacity card from Nokia that is AI-ready and offers ultra-performance and improved scalability while halving energy consumption in comparison to previous product generations, will also be advantageous to Optus. In order to accommodate the increasing surge in traffic, Nokia will also provide Ponente with its ultra-performance, energy-efficient baseband control board.
With ReefShark SoCs, which include cutting-edge AI acceleration capabilities, Nokia’s AirScale base stations are AI-ready. Additionally, they expand to accommodate larger AI workloads.
“Our deployment with Nokia’s new Habrok massive MIMO radio and new Levante and Ponente baseband modules marks an important step in meeting the growing demand from our customers for enhanced connectivity in Australia’s regional areas. We know connectivity is vital for our customers so they can stream their favorite content, download TV shows and movies, or upload pictures and videos onto their favorite social media platforms. The Habrok 32 massive MIMO radios bring the right balance of performance and cost efficiency for upgrading our 5G network to elevate consumer experiences and drive business productivity. Through this partnership, we are expanding our reach for customers and bringing them high-speed, reliable connectivity to more customers, communities, and enterprises,” said Kent Wu, Optus Vice President of Access Network Strategy, Planning, and Quality at Optus.
“The introduction of Nokia’s latest solutions in this deal strengthens our long-term partnership with Optus. Your AirScale Massive MIMO radios and ultra-performance baseband solutions enable fast network modernization, providing a boost in 5G coverage and speeds for enhanced user experience while maximizing spectral efficiency. We are also helping Optus drive network sustainability through software innovations such as the extreme deep sleep energy-saving mode and the energy-saving capabilities enabled by Nokia’s ReefShark SoC chipset,” said Tommi Uitto, President of Mobile Networks at Nokia.
Nokia’s extensive AirScale portfolio of 5G RAN solutions includes the Habrok 32 massive MIMO radios and Levante baseband cards, which give operators like Optus a high-performance, future-proof ecosystem to create next-generation, energy-efficient networks with improved scalability and reliability.
