By doing this, he became the first physician in China to identify this particular kind of kidney cancer at a time when there were only 17 instances recorded globally.

It is not common for patients to encounter a specialist such as Dr. Wang. Many are “missed diagnosed,” or misdiagnosed, which means the clinician doesn’t recognize an existing ailment.

Patients may now be sure that their diseases will be identified accurately, even if they do not benefit from Dr. Wang’s experience.

A huge pathology model was launched by Ruijin Hospital in February, and it is anticipated to greatly increase diagnostic accuracy and efficiency while speeding up medical intelligence in pathology diagnosis scenarios.

The Ruipath model is based on Huawei’s DCS AI solution, which is a collection of services and technologies intended to improve data centers’ intelligence, performance, and efficiency by integrating artificial intelligence.

RuiPath, which has been developed over the last three years, handles many data formats in fields such as pathology, imaging, and clinical. In China, it covers 90% of all kinds of cancer.

“RuiPath is a clinical-grade multimodal interactive pathology model,” said Ning Guang, president of the hospital and academician at the Chinese Academy of Engineering. “It was built on the comprehensive business processes of the digital smart pathology department of Ruijin Hospital.”

Digital technology has already assisted Ruijin in enhancing patient care through better data management, including diagnostics.

For instance, pathologist physicians must carefully review the hundreds of specimen slides that the hospital receives each day. Apart from the overwhelming amount of labor, pathologists also have to cope with issues pertaining to medical picture preservation. After a few years, slides often fade and lose their usefulness. The issue is exacerbated by antiquated methods like handwritten labeling.

A solution is promised by digital technology. Glass slide storage, fading, breakage, loss, and retrieval issues can be resolved by permanently storing data in a digital library. At any time and from any location, doctors may read any portion of a digital slide image at any necessary magnification ratio.

However, it also confronts fresh difficulties. For instance, data storage systems have difficulties when creating, storing, and reading large digital slide pictures. An HD movie has the same data capacity as a single digital slide picture. Particularly in bigger facilities, tens or even hundreds of thousands of pathological slide pictures might be produced per day.

Hospital storage resources are strained by the need to keep data for an extended period of time in order to comply with regulatory compliance requirements.

In order to create a pathology data lake, Ruijin Hospital used OceanStor Pacific scale-out storage, which reduced the size of the data files by up to 45% and read 1,000 slide pictures per second—80 times quicker than was feasible with conventional storage techniques.
