Exterior designer Francesco d’Amore adds, “The body design of the new Audi A6 Sedan is clear and functional. Its minimalistic design combines elegance and sportiness. The most important design feature is the curve of the upper edge of the window, which flows elegantly and sweepingly from the front side windows into the fixed rear window. That is typical Audi, and it showcases the streamlined body shape of the A6 Sedan.”

A fundamental component of Audi’s design DNA are the expansive surfaces and dynamic lines that combine to create the quattro blisters that forcefully protrude from the shoulder region. Together with the broad track, these characteristics epitomize sportiness.

Excellent aerodynamics are also a result of the large Singleframe grille at the front, which is positioned low and extends to the lower edge of the bumper. Furthermore, a front spoiler in the front bumper guarantees improved airflow around the underbody and lowers front-axle lift.

The side air intakes at the front, sometimes known as “air curtains,” are a perfect illustration of the cooperation between the designers and aerodynamic specialists. They serve the purpose of directing airflow as smoothly as possible around the vehicle’s side and front wheels. Close collaboration between designers, part developers, and aerodynamics experts is the cornerstone of vehicle development. Early on, intensive communication is crucial. This entails specifying the drive, chassis, and wheel dimensions and ideas. The vehicle’s body is optimized using iterative methods, initially with simulations and then with a physical model in a wind tunnel. An accurate geometric model of every surface is produced digitally at Strack, the link between the Design and Construction departments, with a tenth of a millimeter precision. Analyzing and visualizing the airflowpatterns across the whole vehicle is made feasible by computer simulations. 3D simulations and improvements to the physical model in the wind tunnel are complementary technologies.

The A6 Sedan’s stretched rear is especially innovative, in classic Audi manner. It exudes luxury with its broad light strip and elevated Audi rings. One unique aspect of the back is the small upward curvature at the end. This design is essential to the A6 Sedan’s exceptional aerodynamics. The trailing edge’s acute angle and the hollow groove in front of it provide the best possible stall.

The wake region, or the airflow disturbance at and behind the rear, is reduced and maintained within an ideal range for aerodynamics when combined with the massive, broad diffuser. Driving dynamics are improved as a consequence of the perfect balance between drag and lift at the rear axle.

There are several hidden aerodynamic measures in addition to the evident functional components. For example, the advanced aerodynamic concept includes two independently controlled cool-air intakes behind the Singleframe grille. They guarantee that the airflow around the engine bay is optimized. Audi has also improved the seal between the cooling unit and the bumper, cutting airflow losses there by up to 70%, in order to fully utilize this technology.
