Since the 2017 Golf’s January launch, Volkswagen has been teasing prototypes of its performance variations wearing camouflage. The real reveal of what’s behind the hood is still pending, but for now, we know what the new Golf R Mk8.5 is capable of. The VW Golf R with the greatest power in history is this one. It is powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbocharged engine that produces 329 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. That is an additional 15 lb-ft and a gain of 14 horsepower over the preceding Golf R. Even talk of a stronger Golf R Clubsport is present. To reach sixty-two miles per hour, the new Golf R needs 4.8 seconds; with the Performance pack installed, it takes 4.6 seconds. Official US data will be needed to determine whether this iteration is faster than the previous one, which reached 60 mph in 4.5 seconds. Only 155 mph is its maximum speed; add the Performance pack, and it soars to 167 mph.
