Volkswagen is adding the most powerful turbocharged petrol engines (TSI) to the best-selling Tiguan, Passat, and new Tayron models. These are standard with the intelligently managed 4MOTION all-wheel drive. TSI and 4MOTION can tow up to 2,200 kg (Passat and Tiguan) and 2,500 kg (Tayron with proper equipment). The Tiguan and Tayron SUVs are available in 2.0 TSI 4MOTION with 150 kW (204 PS) and 195 kW (265 PS) engines. The Passat 2.0 TSI 4MOTION is always available with the more powerful 195 kW engine. The new Volkswagen all-wheel drive vehicles are already being sold in various European regions. The more powerful 195 kW version of the Passat 2.0 TSI 4MOTION is always available. In some European areas, sales of the new Volkswagen all-wheel drive vehicles have started. The most potent TDI engine, with 142 kW (193 PS), is complemented by the turbocharged gasoline engines.
In all weather and road conditions, the Tiguan, Tayron, and Passat’s new engines and standard 4MOTION all-wheel drive may increase safety and driving stability. They are also excellent at hauling cars. All three models’ all-wheel drive systems transfer power to the rear axle using a 4MOTION clutch, which is distinguished by its clever energy management. Only the front axle is powered in typical driving circumstances, such as on dry city roads without maximum load restrictions. This reduces fuel consumption.
Only when increased load needs or the possibility of a wheel losing grip arise does the 4MOTION connection and propshaft incorporate the rear axle into the driving system. To have the optimum grip on icy roads, for instance, the all-wheel drive may also be manually engaged.
Another technological feature available on all-wheel-drive versions with optional ball coupling is that when the 4MOTION system detects a linked trailer, the extra trailer driving profile is enabled automatically. The clever 4MOTION clutch transfers power properly between the front and rear axles when trailer towing. The Tiguan and Passat 2.0 TSI 4MOTION are intended for trailers weighing up to 2,200 kg; the Tayron 2.0 TSI 4MOTION is based on equipment authorized for towing capabilities of up to 2,500 kg (braked with a 12% gradient in each case).
4MOTION plus 150 kW. The 150 kW (204 PS) initial TSI power level is where the Tiguan and Tayron are offered. The TSI already sends its maximum torque of 320 Nm to the all-wheel drive from an engine speed of 1,400 rpm when paired with a seven-speed direct shift gearbox (DSG). The effectiveness of the TSI is demonstrated by WLTP consumption numbers of 7.5 to 8.3 l/100 km, depending on the product line and equipment. Dynamic capability is also demonstrated, with a peak speed of well over 220 km/h and a sprint time of less than 7.5 seconds from 0 to 100 km/h. As with the Life equipment line, the Tiguan 2.0 TSI 4MOTION starts at 48,175 euros, while the bigger Tayron costs 50,770 euros.
195 kW plus 4 MOTION. 195 kW (265 PS) is the most potent TSI engine found in the Tiguan, Tayron, and Passat. The legendary Golf GTI is powered by an identical engine as this one, according to the engine code and maximum output. Volkswagen engineers have, however, particularly modified the engine to run the bigger Tiguan, Tayron, and Passat models, raising the maximum torque for these vehicles. The engine of the all-wheel-drive Tiguan, Tayron, and Passat generates a maximum torque of 400 Nm from 1,650 rpm, as opposed to 370 Nm like the front-wheel-drive Golf GTI. Of these three product lines, the R-Line, the sportiest equipment specification, is always paired with the most potent four-cylinder TSI.
An example of the 2.0-liter turbocharged engine’s capability is the Passat 2.0 TSI 4MOTION (62,990 euros), which can reach a peak speed of 250 km/h and accelerate from a stop to 100 km/h in 5.8 seconds. The two SUVs’ respective times were 240 km/h and 6.3 seconds (Tayron, 59,755 Euro) and 5.9 seconds and 242 km/h (Tiguan, 57,995 Euro). The WLTP numbers, which range from 8.0 to 9.0 l/100 km depending on the product line and equipment, are exceptional for cars of this size and capability.
