The BMW Group has achieved two significant milestones with the production of 3,000,000 electrified vehicles, 1,500,000 of which are entirely electric. From battery-electric to plug-in hybrid, the BMW Group currently manufactures electrified vehicles at all of its factories, continuing the worldwide success story that began in Leipzig in 2013. An exploration of evolution, electrical knowledge, and electromobility as a contributing element to our development.

The BMW Group’s 3,000,000th electric vehicle, a plug-in hybrid BMW 330e Touring for a client in the UK, rolled off the production line at Plant Munich at the end of May, bringing the Portimao Blue car into the spotlight with its golden bow on its bonnet.

Our 1,500,000th battery-electric car was another noteworthy event that month. Portugal was the intended destination of the MINI Countryman E, which was manufactured at Plant Leipzig. Thus, the Saxony facility has now completed a full cycle as the starting point of the BMW Group’s transition to electromobility.

The BMW i3 was the first completely electric vehicle to go into series production in 2013. Because of its unique design, the little City Sprinter had to be manufactured on a separate manufacturing line in addition to the regular lines. For over a decade, it was manufactured in Leipzig. The BMW Group’s first plug-in hybrid, the BMW i8 sports car, was also put into production in Leipzig in 2014.

Leipzig now produces BMW and MINI automobiles on the same assembly line, with all powertrain systems—combustion, plug-in hybrid, and battery-electric—together. Additionally, it produces high-voltage batteries for use in the manufacturing network and in its own automobiles.

The flexibility of Leipzig and the BMW Group’s other plants follows a clear strategy: “The BMW Group’s extreme flexibility in production means it can serve customers’ wishes in line with the markets and with demand,” says Milan Nedeljković, Board Member for Production. “With all the plants in our global production network now set up for electromobility, we are ready to carry on growing in this segment.”

The BMW Group has been progressively incorporating electric vehicles into its manufacturing at its global sites since 2013. The majority of the vehicles that came off the assembly lines at first were plug-in hybrids, but in 2019, we expanded our battery-electric lineup to include our second brand by starting manufacture of the MINI Cooper SE in Oxford, UK. With the BMW iX3 produced in China and the BMW iX and i4 produced in Dingolfing and Munich starting in 2021, our battery-electric lineup has been steadily growing since 2020.

The BMW Group has been able to produce entirely electric vehicles since 2022 because of improvements made to its Chinese and German factories. With the Neue Klasse, San Luis Potosí in Mexico will begin producing completely electric cars in 2027, while Spartanburg in the US is presently getting ready to begin manufacturing in 2026. Similar to Plant Rosslyn in South Africa, Spartanburg and San Luis Potosí are already producing plug-in hybrids, and other electrified versions are being produced for the local markets in Brazil, India, and Thailand.

For a long time, the BMW Group has also started selling electric drive components outside of Germany. Plant Dingolfing has been manufacturing electric motors, high-voltage batteries, and battery modules since the introduction of the BMW i3. Additionally, the Competence Centre for E-Drive Industrial has moved to Dingolfing as the industrial network has gradually been electrified. Capacity had already surpassed 500,000 units annually by 2022.

Fifth-generation high-voltage batteries are now being produced in Regensburg, Leipzig, and Spartanburg as well, as electromobility continues to grow. In the meantime, the teams’ experience is being smoothly incorporated into the sixth-generation electric powertrain, which will debut in the Neue Klasse at BMW Group Plant Debrecen in late 2025.

The percentage of sales at the BMW Group that are made up of electric vehicles is steadily rising. Three-quarters of them were completely electric vehicles, and they accounted for 25% of our production output in 2024. We sold 109,513 battery-electric BMW, MINI, and Rolls-Royce cars in the first quarter of 2025, a 32.4 percent increase from the previous year. Therefore, nearly one out of every five vehicles that the BMW Group delivers is totally electric. And the adventure goes on: we’re still open to all technologies, strategically adaptable, and committed to realizing our mission of influencing global transportation for the future.

With the introduction of the new BMW iX3, the BMW Group will begin a new chapter in its history at the end of this year. The Gen6 e-drive will be introduced with the Neue Klasse’s debut model. We are now building high-voltage battery assembly factories in five nations on three continents: San Luis Potosí (Mexico), Woodruff near Spartanburg in the United States, Shenyang (China), Irlbach-Straßkirchen (Germany), and Debrecen (Hungary).
