Even if Ford is no longer the most remembered brand in America, 2024 wasn’t a quiet year for the company. The manufacturer issued a recall for 295,449 vehicles with the 6.7-liter diesel engine on December 20. A stopped engine or decreased power might result from an issue with these vehicles’ fuel pumps. And to put it simply, the fix is intriguing.
Super Duty vehicles manufactured between 2020 and 2022 are the main target of the issue, which impacts 286,138 F-250s and F-350s in addition to the bigger F-450, F-550, and F-600 pickups. Additionally, a few F-650 and F-750 commercial trucks are included. Aged biodiesel fuel may not be efficiently absorbed by these trucks’ fuel pumps; deposits may accumulate on internal parts, impairing or even killing the pump.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has a chronological study that indicates that problems began during the COVID epidemic. Older gasoline accumulated in the tanks as a result of vehicles being stored for extended periods of time. Although Ford does not define “older” gasoline, in August 2021 the firm replaced the problematic fuel pump with a new one.
The gasoline pump was supplied by Bosch to several automakers. Although Ford kept an eye on the problem for a few of years prior to finally issuing this recall, the timeline report notes that it was the cause of fuel-related recalls from other brands as early as 2021. The carmaker records 58 customer service reports, 498 field reports, and 2,070 warranty reports over that period that may be connected to the fuel pump issue. Ford is not aware of any mishaps or injuries brought on by this problem.
Regarding the odd remedy, Ford will not swap out the gasoline pumps in impacted cars. Rather, an upgrade to the program will “increase pump cooling and prevent formation of aged biodiesel deposits.” Notification of the recall to dealers has already begun. Notification of individual owners will start on January 13.
Ford has 67 recalls totaling 4,777,161 cars by the end of 2024. Although there were 13 more recalls than the previous year, there were 1.6 million fewer automobiles impacted. Stellantis had the most recalls (72), while Tesla had the most (5,135,991) among all automakers.
