Audi Tradition is exhibiting a new display at the Audi Forum Neckarsulm that highlights the company’s ascension to the top mid-size range with the Audi 100. On the second floor of the Audi Forum, guests can see 17 displays from eight generations of the C model series, beginning with the Audi 100 from 1968 and running until April 30.

Over the course of its four model generations, the Audi 100 earned the Golden Steering Wheel five times, “Car of the Year” twice, and “World Car of the Year” once. The 3.2 million Audi 100s sold worldwide demonstrate the model series’ popularity. The debut of the first Audi 100 in 1968 was prefaced by an intriguing narrative, since its development began in secrecy. Volkswagenwerk AG acquired Auto Union GmbH in the mid-1960s and forbade the Ingolstadt-based manufacturer from creating new models. Ludwig Kraus, Auto Union’s Technical Director at the time, disobeyed the instruction to solely work on current models.

When VW Beetles were being produced in the Ingolstadt facility, Kraus regarded this as the only way for an independent Auto Union to survive. His bravery was rewarded, as Wolfsburg approved his Audi 100 research. Production began in 1968, and Ingolstadt swiftly hit its capacity constraints. In 1970, manufacture of the Audi 100 was shifted to the Neckarsulm facility. The business sold 800,000 automobiles in the first series. Three more versions followed, demonstrating Audi’s claim to Vorsprung durch Technik with significant advancements such as the completely galvanized body, better aerodynamics, and extremely efficient engines.

Since 1994, the Audi A6 has built on the success of the Audi 100. Nine Audi 100 variations and eight Audi A6 variants are on show in Neckarsulm, with an Audi RS 6 Avant GT1) set to debut in 2024. According to curator Stefan Felber, each of the 17 automobiles has a unique feature. In addition to the “first one,” which established the ancestry line, visitors will learn about a “globetrotter,” “a feat of spaciousness,” a “long one,” a “sloping one,” a “connected one,” and the “supreme one” – the latter is the Audi RS 6 Avant GT, which brings the nearly 60-year model series history on display to a close.
