Audi is reinforcing its nomenclature in an alphanumeric style to provide global standards and clarity for all consumers. Moving forward, it will display each model’s size and positioning internationally in a consistent and clear manner. The former difference between electric cars and combustion engine models based on their number is no longer applicable.
“This decision is the result of intensive discussions and also follows the wishes of our customers as well as feedback from our international dealers,” says Marco Schubert, Member of the Board of Management for Sales and Marketing at AUDI AG. “Our nomenclature now provides all customers worldwide with an intuitive orientation in our portfolio. We choose the names of our models in a way that reveals size and positioning at first glance.”
The global alphanumeric model name will now consist of one or more letters followed by a number. The letters A and Q remain to distinguish low-floor and high-floor automobiles. The numbers, which now range from one to eight, allow for a clear classification regardless of the kind of powertrain. As a result, the former differentiation between various drivetrain technology based on even and odd model numbers is no longer valid.
The Audi A6, with a combustion engine, will be the first new car to utilize this designation. It represents the brand’s long and successful history in the full-size sector and will be released internationally on March 4. The powertrain code, for example, will easily distinguish the A6 Avant TFSI from the all-electric A6 Avant e-tron.
