Customer teams from all over the world triumphed with the Audi R8 LMS in GT3 and GT4 variants, as well as the Audi RS 3 LMS, at the end of May. In addition to overall wins in Europe and the United States, Audi Sport’s customer racing balance sheet was bolstered by a slew of top-tier achievements.
Memo Gidley won the inaugural Audi R8 LMS race in America for SKI Autosports. In the GT America powered by AWS racing series, the veteran sports car driver began the fourth event on the Sebring circuit in second place. In the early stages of the race, he passed an opponent’s BMW, which had started first, and claimed the lead. However, his team’s violation of the regulations during the pre-start phase resulted in a five-second penalty for the private Audi driver. Throughout the 40-minute race, Gidley was able to compensate for his deficit. He won by 0.364 seconds over BMW driver Justin Rothberg. In the second race, Gidley came in second. Following a fantastic weekend in the third round of the 24H European Series, two teams of Audi customers celebrated. An Audi R8 LMS had won the 12h Misano the year before, but Team Haas RT managed to win the race overall. After 416 laps and a lead of less than a minute, Peter Guelinckx, Matisse Lismont, and Jeff Machiels crossed the finish line in the Haas RT Audi R8 LMS. Juta Racing, consisting of Arunas Geciauskas, Nicola Michelon, and Tim Müller, won the GT3-Am class and finished fourth overall. In another R8 LMS, David Pogosian, Andrei Solukovtsev, and Vasily Vladykin made up the third-best amateur team on the Adriatic coast of Italy, thanks to Simpson Motorsport’s Continental Racing. Three class wins, strong overall performances, and additional trophies pleased Audi’s client teams in the GT World Challenge Europe powered by AWS Sprint Cup. The top Gold driver combination from the first race, Gilles Magnus and Paul Evrard in the Audi R8 LMS from Saintéloc Racing, finished fourth overall at the second round at Zandvoort. They won the Gold classification on the difficult dune circuit, 18 seconds ahead of Ferrari and their nearest competitors. The Silver Cup went to Tresor Attempto Racing. In an Audi R8 LMS, Alex Aka/Ezequiel Perez Companc finished 3.4 seconds ahead of a Mercedes-AMG. Ivan Klymenko/Lorens Lecertua of the Saintéloc Racing Audi finished in third place. In the second race, this driver combination even finished on the podium. They won the Silver Cup by 1.9 seconds over Alex Aka/Ezequiel Perez Companc, who finished in second position overall. Leonardo Moncini/Sebastian Øgaard finished the Tresor Attempto Racing Audi in second place in the Gold Cup. Team Juta Racing finished the first four-hour race at the 24h Nürburgring Qualifiers as the second-best Pro-Am team. The Lithuanian customer team’s Audi R8 LMS was shared by Elia Erhart, Selv, Frank Stippler, and Alexey Veremenko. As the second-best SP 9 amateur team, the Équipe Vitesse squad also finished on the class podium in the second four-hour race. The Audi R8 LMS was driven alternately by Michael Heimrich, Arno Klasen, Lorenzo Rocco, and Eric Ullström. ADAC GT Masters debut triumph was celebrated by Scherer Sport Phx. Denis Bulatov and Nico Hantke were thrilled to finish second in the team’s Audi R8 LMS in the second race at the Lausitzring, where the season began. Tresor Attempto Racing’s Audi R8 LMS produced three class podium finishes at the Campionato Italiano GT Sprint’s season opener. In Vallelunga’s first sprint, the third-best Pro driver team was the Italian-German duo of Rocco Mazzola and Fabio Rauer. The second-place GT3 amateur team in the first race was Alberto Clementi Pisani/Marco Cassarà, who won this class by a margin of 25 seconds in the second race. Simon Reicher and Christopher Haase finished second in the Audi R8 LMS from Eastalent Racing during the second round of the International GT Open.
Instead of the customary two shorter races, the Spa circuit hosted a single race spanning 500 kilometers. Following nearly three hours of racing, the reigning champions finished the Ardennes in second place once more, 12.5 seconds behind, having also earned a second-place finish in the season opening in Portugal. Currently, Haase/Reicher is eleven points back in second place. Out of the three other Audi customer teams competing, Team Olimp Racing emerged victorious. With Karol Basz/Marcin Jedlinski, the Polish team finished third in the Pro-Am division. After the second race weekend of the British GT Cup Championship, Team PB Racing and JMH Automotive came away with four trophies. Peter Erceg, driving the Audi R8 LMS, finished second in the opening sprint at Brands Hatch. After 40 minutes in the second race, he and teammate Marcus Clutton finished in second place once more. In the third and fourth races, Erceg finished third. The CCS Racing Team had a string of podium finishes at the Red Bull Ring in the first race of the Central European GT Cup Series. In the Audi R8 LMS, Thomas Westarp placed third in his class at the end of the FIA CEZ Endurance event. The German finished fourth overall in the two GT Cup Series sprints and the P9 Challenge. Winhere Harmony Racing, an Audi customer team, narrowly lost out on overall victory in both sprints during the second round of the China GT Championship. In Shanghai, the driving duo of Andy Deng and Luo Kailuo had taken first place in both races. After earning a 0.2-second time penalty for an excessively brief pit stop, the two Chinese drivers in the Audi R8 LMS finished the second race just 0.036 seconds behind the leader, whereas in the first race they were 0.051 seconds from winning. They each won the Pro category, finishing second overall. In the first race, the Uno Racing Team achieved third place in the Pro-Am class with the driver combination of Rio and Chen Yechong in another Audi R8 LMS. Customers who purchased the brand won 1-2-3-4 in the amateur division: Hehehe Racing, 33R Harmony Racing, with Steven Zhou and Zhen Mingwei, 610 Racing, with Yang Xiaowei and Pan Deng, and Origine Motorsport, with Min Heng and Jason Gu, won the first race. Jason Gu/Ming Heng placed third in the Am classification in the second race. Another Asian trophy went to an Audi customer team in the Thailand Super Series opener. Karol Basz and Kiki Sak Nana shared an Audi R8 LMS with the B-Quik Absolute Racing team on the Buriram circuit, and they placed third in the first race. In a different Audi R8 LMS, their colleagues Sathaporn Veerachue and Adisak Tangphuncharoen took first place in the GT3 amateur class in both races.
