Beginning in 2021, Toyota has been racing in the Super Taikyu series in Japan using a hydrogen-powered Corolla, furthering its aim to develop ever-better motorsports-bred vehicles and realize a carbon-neutral society. Among the drivers who have competed with the cutting-edge powerplant and offered input throughout its development is Jari-Matti Latvala, team principal of the Toyota Gazoo Racing World Rally Team.

When the experimental GR Yaris H2 made its debut in the FIA World Rally Championship event in Belgium in 2022, driven by Akio Toyoda and Juha Kankkunen, the technology was first seen on European rally stages.

Since then, research has gone on to produce the Rally2 H2 Concept, which will be showcased at Rally Finland to give rally enthusiasts a chance to see how hydrogen may be used as a viable solution for racing in a carbon-neutral future.

Based on the popular GR Yaris Rally2 chassis, the vehicle has an internal combustion engine that runs on compressed hydrogen, producing almost minimal pollution while preserving the noises and feelings that rally enthusiasts love.

The TGR-WRT headquarters in Jyväskylä, Finland, is where the GR Yaris Rally2 H2 Concept was created. It has been tested on local roads, including gravel forest roads similar to those used in Rally Finland. The vehicle will make its public premiere on the mixed-surface Harju stage in the heart of Jyväskylä. It serves as both the rally’s opening stage on Thursday night and SS10 on Friday. The driver will be Kankkunen, the Deputy Team Principal of TGR-WRT and a four-time world champion.

As part of a larger display of hydrogen technology around the city of Jyväskylä, the automobile will also be on display in the service park during the event with other hydrogen-powered cars, including the Toyota Mirai and Tundra.
