BMW iDrive refers to the whole operating and display experience, including infotainment software, displays, and more. BMW iDrive, which was first introduced in 2001, has continuously raised the bar for industry norms in terms of user-friendly design.

The next phase for the BMW Group will be the introduction of the Neue Klasse cars in late 2025, together with the new BMW Panoramic iDrive. The BMW Panoramic iDrive is the next logical step up from earlier iDrive models, with a greater emphasis on driver orientation than previously. It will be included into all new BMW cars starting in late 2025, regardless of the kind of powertrain system. The BMW Operating System X is the clever software that powers the new BMW Panoramic iDrive.

More driver-focused and customizable than before.

The BMW Panoramic Vision, the Central Display, the new multifunction steering wheel, and the new, optional BMW 3D Head-Up Display make up the four main parts of the central interface for driver-vehicle interaction. When combined, these provide an experience that is more focused on the driver than ever before and elevate the distinctive BMW philosophy of Hands on the Wheel, Eyes on the Road to a whole new level.

The driver and passengers may enjoy a whole new level of customizable content thanks to the BMW Panoramic Vision, which projects information across the whole width of the windscreen. The Central Display, which has a free-cut design, is nearby. The Central Display, which is ergonomically positioned directly next to the steering wheel, receives its distinctive color and brightness from the Matrix Backlight technology, which works in any kind of lighting.

Additionally, by projecting the navigation and assisted driving screens directly into the driver’s field of vision, the optional BMW 3D Head-Up Display provides an even more comprehensive perspective for the first time. The new haptic feedback multifunction steering wheel completes the BMW Panoramic iDrive package. Now, the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant can converse in natural language thanks to an integrated Large Language Model (LLM).

Personalization is elevated to a new level with the BMW Panoramic iDrive. The My Mode Personal feature allows users to customize their preferred driving features, including steering and drive system settings, for the first time. Additionally, they may upload their own photographs and customize the Ambient Light and Central Display’s color scheme to suit their preferences. The new “HypersonX” sound experience, created by the BMW Group Sound Design Studio, substantially improves the whole experience. This includes unique driving sounds for the My Modes Personal and Sport in addition to 43 sound indications. The driver and their BMW may communicate emotionally thanks to the multi-dimensional sound spectrum, which precisely adjusts the sounds to the driving environment.

The BMW Operating System X was created internally.

The BMW Operating System X is the software that powers the BMW Panoramic iDrive’s display and functionality. The driver receives the appropriate information at the appropriate time and location thanks to the precise and deftly coordinated handling of the interface components made possible by this cutting-edge infotainment software.

The Android Open Source Project (AOSP) software stack serves as the foundation for the BMW Operating System X, much like its predecessors. It was created entirely internally and brings the BMW Group one step closer to technical and digital independence. In the future, a variety of streaming, gaming, and entertainment options will be made possible by third-party content, which is still completely and smoothly integrated.
